            Exelon . What is the medication?


Exelon is a selective cholinesterase’s brain inhibitor, used to treat Alzheimer’s disease. Exelon increases acetylcholine levels in the brain (there is reduced acetylcholine levels as a result of Alzheimer’s disease) as well as increases cerebral blood flow.


Exelon. Is Exelon effective and safe medication?


Exelon has successfully passed clinical trials in the U.S. and Europe. It was found that a happy bland of efficacy and high tolerability, including elderly patients with intercurrent diseases is typical for Exelon.


Exelon. What are the Recommendations for Administration?


Treatment is recommended to start with a small dose – 3 mg per day (1.5 mg, 2 times daily) gradually stepping up a dose to 1.5 mg for at least 4-6 weeks. The maximum effective dose is 12 mg – per 6 mg 2 times a day.

The medication is produced as caplets (1.5 mg, 3 mg, 4.5 mg or 6 mg) and as a solution for oral administration (1 ml corresponds to 2 mg of the active substance) that allows to titer a dose more gradually and start treatment with lower doses, e.g., from 1 mg.

This gradual dose increasing (according to a recent study in Spain with the participation of 1,516 patients) allows bring about an improvement of the patients’ condition while reducing the risk of the side effects.
